This walking tour itinerary gives visitors of Barcelona an excellent opportunity to get to know the works of famous Barcelona architects who created outstanding Modernism (Art Nouveau) works. Even people without prior knowledge of this style of architecture will enjoy the colourful beauty of the buildings... And if you are an art and architecture connoisseur, this free tour is a must in Barcelona.
The sights are chosen carefully to avoid using public transit and for easy access on foot: most buildings are found in Eixample, a central Barcelona neighbourhood. It is possible to see every sight on the map in one day, but we suggest you make it a leisurely two- or even three-day walk to fully appreciate the vastly different approaches the architects of Barcelona took when creating their Modernist houses.
It is also highly recommended to linger in and around Casa BatllГі, built by the greatest architect of Barcelona, Antoni GaudГ, in 1904. Do not get intimidated by the long entry lines (they move quickly!). The owners of the house supply an excellent audio tour guide in most European languages (English included, of course) free with your admission. Attention to the smallest detail, not only to the general interior and exterior design, is one of the main characteristics of the Art Nouveau style in architecture, and Casa BatllГі is a great hands-on example of that.
